This machine allows anyone to work for minimum wage for as long as they like. Turning the crank on the side releases one penny every 4.97 seconds, for a total of $7.25 per hour. This corresponds to minimum wage for a person in New York. This piece is brilliant on multiple levels, particularly as social commentary. Without a doubt, most people who started operating the machine for fun would quickly grow disheartened and stop when realizing just how little they’re earning by turning this mindless crank. A person would then conceivably realize that this is what nearly two million people in the United States do every day…at much harder jobs than turning a crank. This turns the piece into a simple, yet effective argument for raising the minimum wage.
god damn
Ten years. Ten years I’ve been seeing this wonderful art piece, and STILL our minimum wage REMAINS at 7.25/hour.
Meanwhile, the cost of living has easily tripled.
And minimum wage wasn’t enough to cover it even before.
btw it's fantasy, you really don't need to worry about your world map making "sense" geologically or whatever. make that river flow backwards from the sea into the mountain.
Wait are you saying I don't have to take plate tectonics ocean currents and mineral deposition into account when I make this map? But how will I know where the mountains with gold mines are, or what shores would have the best fishing spots? If I don't map out this entire world in intricate detail, how will I know if this kingdom falls on a major trade route or is sidelined to the periphery of the classical empires?
Unironically I think this site and queer spaces in general do a lot of good for appearance anxiety. To be a daughter who grew up in the stranglehold of the Aéropostale mid-2000's era, to now wake up in 2023 and throw on some absolute bullshit in the morning and go "yeah, a lesbian somewhere would find this super hot." Affirming. Soul-healing.

Is it wrong that I’m cool with “sex” being removed from the pride flag? They should bring back “magic” though.

Personally I think you’re wrong and an idiot but that’s just my opinion.
Fyi this isn’t a dig at people who are asexual or sex-repulsed. Gay sex was literally a criminal act in the parts of the United States Texas until 2003. A healthy relationship to both sex and your body is a major component of the human experience, but especially LGBTQ+ people. Yes this includes people who have a healthy understanding of their boundaries with regards to sex. To try and divorce the fight for LGBTQ+ rights from sexuality is both dangerous and ahistorical.
The “sex” stripe isn’t “have sex.” Mainstream society has no problem with people having sex. We don’t need a flag to declare our right to have sex.
The stripe means “have the sex you want to have, with the people you want to have sex with.”
And that includes “no sex, with no people.”
(For anyone who didn’t know: the pink (sex) and turquoise (magic & art) were removed because it was hard to source those colors for flags, not because of any controversy over their meanings.)
